{"id":235,"date":"2014-07-21T08:44:19","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T08:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tojoeapen.com\/blog\/?p=235"},"modified":"2016-12-24T07:05:17","modified_gmt":"2016-12-24T07:05:17","slug":"paradoxes-for-hr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tojoeapen.com\/blog\/paradoxes-for-hr\/","title":{"rendered":"Paradoxes for HR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A<strong> paradox<\/strong> could be defined as a statement which\u00a0seems to say two opposite things but that may be true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Figuring\u00a0out and reasoning through\u00a0a\u00a0paradox is an important and valuable exercise, for any individual or team. \u00a0I personally find them as extremely useful\u00a0avenues to stretch, question and clarify my own thinking, logic and approach.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of writing a blog post on this topic came as I was reading, &#8220;HR From The Outside In&#8221; (authored by RBL Group experts, including Dr. Dave Ulrich). \u00a0The following paradoxes from the book seem to be relevant for any HR team to figure out, in your\u00a0respective organizational context. \u00a0From personal experiences, the lack of clarity and active dialogue can lead to confusing scenarios, frustration and stress within organizations. \u00a0Getting caught in &#8216;no man&#8217;s&#8217; land becomes a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these may be highly relevant for leadership discussions and decision scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tojoeapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/6-paradoxes-facing-HR.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-242\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tojoeapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/6-paradoxes-facing-HR-300x227.png\" alt=\"6 paradoxes facing HR\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outside &amp;\u00a0Inside<\/strong><br \/>\nHow do you simultaneously understand the dynamics and operate in the marketplace and the workplace?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Business &amp;\u00a0People<br \/>\n<\/strong>How do you balance\u00a0the tradeoff between people and business? Many discussions in recent times have suggested that HR is losing\u00a0the &#8216;Human&#8217; in &#8216;Human Resources&#8217;. \u00a0On the other side, I&#8217;ve heard leaders say that HR is too &#8216;soft&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organization &amp; Individual<br \/>\n<\/strong>How do you manage the tensions between talent and teamwork, individual ability and organizational capability? In today&#8217;s environment, there are lots of discussions regarding &#8216;outliers&#8217; and the value they bring to an organization. \u00a0An overemphasis may lead to a feeling of unfairness,\u00a0frustration and disruption of shared values.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Process &amp; Event<br \/>\n<\/strong>How do you look beyond isolated activities and events to processes that generate sustainable solutions?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future &amp; Past<br \/>\n<\/strong>How do you balance the past and the future &#8211; rely on the past for present choices or ignore the past?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic &amp; Administrative<br \/>\n<\/strong>How do you balance flawless execution of administrative actions with strategic adaptation to future business scenarios? One common discussion and frustration I&#8217;ve encountered within HR organizations is regarding where the &#8216;strategic&#8217; line is drawn, how and who are involved, and to what extent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An interesting observation here seems to be\u00a0that there are relationships to be considered among these paradoxes, e.g., balancing the tradeoffs between business and people may need to take into consideration the future and past.
